Le village,
vers 1910.
(carte postale
par James Valentine ? Sons)
A picturesque
town and a majestic lake to discover...
| Founded
in 1914, from a division of Montcalm and Wentworth Townships, the small
municipality of Lac-des-Seize-Iles enjoys a great location. Indeed, it
is located about 20 minutes northwest of Saint-Sauveur via Highway 364
and approximately 35 minutes from the village of Mont-Tremblant via Highway
327. |
.
| With
a length of about 5 km and situated at an altitude of 290 m, Lac des Seize
Îles remains, to this day, one of the most beautiful lakes in the
Laurentians, landlocked since the Precambrian era by the oldest mountains
in the world. At its north and south ends approximately 156 permanent,
year round citizens reside while about 800 seasonal, residents enjoy the
splendor of Sixteen Island Lake mostly during the summer months. |
..
| The
southern part of the Municipality is hosts to another gem of nature: Lac
Laurel, a smaller lake but still full of charm. It’s during the late 19th
century that activities began on the shores of the lake and at both, the
south and North end with the arrival of vacationers in search of picturesque
landscapes and scenery and wonderful trout fishing and permanent residents
seeking work in the logging industry and other settlers seeking a corner
of the country to settle and raise a family. |
..
| In
the early 20th century, a railway line belonging to the Canadian National
Railway connected the village at the north end to the world by allowing
easy access to St. Jerome via Monfort, Morin Heights and St. Sauveur. |
..
| In
1964, this same railway was abandoned but some of its infrastructure enabled
the establishment of the "Aerobic Corridor", a path winding through the
municipalities of Morin-Heights and Wentworth-Nord alongside a multitude
of lakes and rivers, offering hikers scenes, scents and enchanting sounds.
The Village of Lac-des-Seize-Îles remains one of the main gateways
to this idyllic Corridor. |
.
| Conscious
of the privilege they have to live in a part of the country so picturesque,
its seasonal and permanent residents continually strive to preserve its
rural nature, its charm, its legendary tranquility and healthyenvironment.
The citizens of Lac-des-Seize-Îles welcome all vacationers and tourists
who are willing to share in their efforts to preserve this idyllic heritage
for future generations. |
